About the Project

The goal of the Open Source Medievalist Project is to make the Middle Ages accessible to all through curation of online resources. This site has links to primary and secondary sources on the Middle Ages, digitized manuscripts, research guides, language resources, and information on the field of medieval studies and what to do if you want to pursue it. Medieval studies is a vast, multidisciplinary field that includes history, religion, art, law, science, language, and literature and it can be quite daunting, especially for students who are new to it or people with just a casual interest. Likewise, research can be difficult even for experienced medievalists due to issues with the availability of some resources-- many of which are often accessible only with institution credentials. The idea for this site came about during talks with one of my professors about the issues in medieval studies, especially how hard it can be to find what you need to research and how it can be a difficult field to find your footing in, which can drive students away. This project seeks to make medieval research less cloistered (as it were) and accessible to anyone with any level of interest and experience.

My name is Fyodor Wheeler. I have a B.A. in history from Indiana University and my main period of interest is the 14th-15th centuries in England and France. Most of my research centers around the French poet Charles, Duke of OrlĂ©ans, and I’m currently translating his Middle English poetry to modern English. I also have a passion for information and accessibility. I’ll be updating this site, both its content and its code, as frequently as possible.
